Hello Everyone!
I hope this newsletter enjoying what’s left of the summer and gearing for Football season. Hope you all had a Great Labor Day Weekend! With that said plenty of things on tap for the rest of the year and the 2008 Calendar rapidly filling up with some Incredible Events! I would first like to review the IKAEF Summer Camp held in Germany this year. With over 140 participants this was one 2007’s largest gatherings of Filipino Martial Artists in the world!
IKAEF Summercamp 2007 Review
With 29 countries represented in this, the 15th Anniversary of the IKAEF, this year’s camp truly proved itself to be an Amazing Experience for all involved.
The IKAEF was co-founded in 1992 in order to better represent the European community at international Filipino events, such as the held at the WEAKF tournaments and seminars. The first president was Guro Bob Breen from England and the first vice president was Jeff Espinous from France. Due to other obligations Bob Breen eventually left the IKAEF, 15 years later the IKAEF has truly grown into an international organization. The two driving forces behind today’s IKAEF are
IKAEF President: Punong Guro Johan Skalberg of Sweden
Johan’s accomplishments are truly monumental…Johan Skalberg is the true pioneer of Filipino Martial Arts in Sweden. He is Two Time world WEKAF heavyweight stick fighting champion, and head instructor for Ernesto Presas’s Kombatan in Sweden. Johan is Currently a 7th Dan in Grandmaster Presas’s organization. Punong Guro Skalberg is also the Scandinavian coordinator for the Inayan Martial Arts Association.
Punong Guro Skalberg taught a variety subjects at the camp including Kombatan, Kali Sikaran and Suntukan. One of the most memorable classes he taught was with Pangulong Krishna Godhania which dealt with environmental training in the forest including how to use common objects such as trees to bait your opponent as well as disarming.
Johan is an amazing teacher, more so his fun and friendly atmosphere makes learning a special experience.
IKAEF Technical Director:
Punong Guro Jeff Espinous of France
Punong Guro Espinous is the founder of Kali Sikaran. With an amazing training history Jeff has learned and trained with some of the best in the world. He has truly created a dynamic and efficient form of Filipino Martial Arts. More so he has done an amazing job in introducing the Filipino Martial Arts to people around the world. Punong Guro Espinous the European coordinator for the Inayan Martial Arts Association.
Punong Guro Espinous taught a variety of subjects at this years camp including Kali Sikaran, Panantukan and this year specialized in his Silat Concepts which drew large classes. Jeff’s energy was infectious this year and he did an incredible job of making sure everyone had a Great time!
In addition this year’s 15th Anniversary IKAEF Instructor line up included…
Master Andy Gibney of England
Master Andy Gibney is the United Kingdom Representative of Cacoy Canete Doces Pares which he is a 6th Dan and JKD under Grandmaster Richard Bustillo. Master Gibney is truly a leader in the English FMA and JKD community. In addition his study NLP and in helping others is truly a asset to today’s practioner.
Master Gibney shared various portions of his curriculum including JKD trapping, Corto Olisi(Stick) Doce Pares and the Pangamut of Grandmaster Cacoy Canete. Master Gibney truly gave a clinic on the different aspects of Filipino Martial Arts. Master Gibney also helped several of the camp participants with phobias and fears through his understanding of NLP training. At one point a person with extreme fear of talking in front of people addressed the entire crowd of 140 people! Master’s Gibney’s impact on people’s lives was simply put, Martial Arts at it’s Best! Changing Lives One at a Time!
Pangulong Guro Krishna Godhania from England
Back for his second fantastic year was Pangulong Guro Krishna Godhania of Warrior’s Eskrima. Guro Godhania is always a crowd pleaser with his very clear instructional style and smile. Guro Godhania shared several elements of Warrior’s Eskrima including Espada y Daga, Knife, Double Stick and the Knife work of Sayoc Kali.
Krishna is truly a treasure in the Filipino Martial Arts World, he is always willing to answer any question and share as much as he can. In addition PG Godhania was always leading the fun at our IKAEF night time activities. We are truly lucky to have his expertise at the IKAEF events.
Guro Charles Goosens from Belgium
Charles is an extremely talented and giving teacher. He is the head instructor for the Cinco Tero Escrima. Guro Goosens is one of the most generous teachers I know. He shared many aspects of the Cinco Tero system and I can attest to it’s effectiveness as I was on the Business end of several of his techniques during our teaching session together, OUCH!
In addition Charles is one of the most gifted training blade makers I know. His metal training Swords and Knives are highly sought out in Europe and I’m sure will start making their way over here to the USA soon. For information on how to get in touch with Charles please contact me at guroward@inayanmartialarts.com
Guro Adrien Rodriguez from Switzerland
Adrien is simply incredible with his friendly approach, and Fun presentation of material…
Adrien covered aspects of Dumog, a mixture of traditional grappling and submission techniques, along with Japanese and Brazilian techniques are becoming an amazing combination of ground skills. Of great value was Adrien’s entry into submission techniques as well as some very effective and simple escapes.
Coach Andreas Schmidt from Germany
Andreas was an amazing addition to this year’s camp. Andreas is the Eight European Champion in Luta Livre. Known in Brazil as “AndyConda” Andreas demonstrated and taught classes in stand up grappling, Positional Escapes, and Submissions both standing and on the Ground. Of particular interest to me were Andy’s Take Downs! What ever position you were or could put him in, he would take you down into an automatic submission.
The entire camp Andreas had a great energy and smiled the entire time which made learning from him a true joy!
Pangulong Guro Jon Ward from the USA
As always I had a great time with my family overseas! These are some of the most incredible people in the world and I truly feel blessed that martial arts had introduced to such dedicated students, teachers and even better friends!
While in Germany I shared Kadena Knife techniques. Double Dagger, Larga Mano concepts dealing with when someone has closed the gap, Serrada and Espada y Daga against multiple opponents.
I would especially like to recognize Bethany Schultz and Paul Meier, two of our students who made an amazing commitment to their training by attending the IKAEF camp! They stepped up and represented our association with class, dignity and a hard work ethic! For the record in the seven intense days of training these two attended EVERY training session! Congratulations to you Paul and Bethany!
Special THANKS go out to Julia Pattis our camp coordinator. She did a wonderful job and spent countless hours making this years camp this best ever! Thank you Julia for everything!!!

Inayan Beach Workout!!!
On the last Sunday of August our Association gathered for what turned out to be a incredible workout! With great weather we had 18 people enjoy the beaches of Santa Cruz. Focusing on Serrada and Kadena de Mano everyone really stepped up and performed at a higher level!
On a personal note, the beach has always held a special place for me as it was one of my teacher’s favorite place to train. It was an incredible moment for me when after a 3 hour workout I walked across a bluff hiding the ocean to find our students flow sparring in the Ocean. I had shared the stories of doing this with Suro to the others. Time dictated that we could not do that particular training…so after a hard workout our students took it upon themselves to experience it the Unique and Chilly Training!
Welcome New Students

In Remembrance…
September 27th, 2007 will mark the Seven year anniversary of Mangisursuro Mike Inay’s passing. In our time of solace on this day I would like you all to take a moment and be proud that you are carrying on the tradition and memory of a man who gave so much of himself to further the Filipino Martial Arts. Suro was a complex man, what was clear though was his love of teaching and sharing Inayan Eskrima with as many of those as he could.
Though taken from us far too soon, his enthusiasm and love of the Filipino Martial Arts continues within us all…
Until we see you again Suro…
