Inayan Martial Arts Association
2007 November/December

Hey Everyone!!!

So here’s the last newsletter of the year!! ! I truly hope that this has been an inspirational and rewarding year for you all… and this tool in our communication process has been beneficial to all of our members, schools and friends around the World!
With that said…

Review of the Mangisursuro Mike Inay Memorial Workout…

Sunday September 29th, 2007

With an incredible member turnout and weather this years memorial workout this year annual Memorial workout was awesome!

With some 35 participants and another 20 family members and supporters in attendance this was by far our largest gathering for this Inayan tradition…

During the three plus hour training members of our organization covered a variety of different in depth topics, with a significant emphasis on Sinawali, Espada y Daga, Dequerdas and Serrada.

Our students stepped up the level training and truly committed themselves to a deeper level and understanding of Inayan Eskrima… You all are constantly challenging yourself in training and it shows more and more every class…you should all know what a wonderful job you are doing!!!! I am very proud of everyone of you!!!

A new addition to our training….or maybe I should say a very OLD one was the use of our very own Dequerdas Tunnel! For those of you not aware of the legend of the Dequerdas Tunnel and Inayan Eskrima, briefly the Tunnel was a Legendary test of Eskrimador’s in the Philippines. As the story goes the Tunnel was rigged with many traps and set off by foot levers and trip wires…these would then release a series of strikes with blades and sticks striking at various parts of the body. Think Indiana Jones plus…

As the legend goes Dizon was the only person to come out of the tunnel un-scathed by the ordeal. Though we were not as extreme as the original Dequerdas Tunnel the surprises it presented definitely kept with the spirit of the original. If you think this year’s tunnel was something wait till you see year’s! Yes were already working on it.

In addition to our local Inayan Martial Arts Association family members Master Scott Abbott, our Arizona affiliate instructor made the incredible trip to join us in this family tradition…I can not say enough about Master Abbott as a martial artist or a friend…his dedication to empowering and sharing with other people is something truly unique. As the lead Instructor of Arizona it is his leadership that will take our organization to the next level…

Also we were fortunate to have Grandmaster Dave Burt, founder of American Fighting Systems join us. GM Burt is a legend within local martial arts circles…constantly refining his insights and observations of actual combat confrontations, GM Burt leads a revolution within the conscience of the National Martial Arts Community…

Even more than the amazing training we came together as a family…with contributions from everyone, we had an amazing dinner that was highlighted by Sara Moscov’s Tri- Tip which people are still talking about!!!! Thank you all for you contributions to our Family Meal

We would especially like to thank the Kessler family for all that that give to this event! This is where the Memorial workout started, and we can not thank this very special family enough for the value and energy they give each and every one of us.
A Special Note…and Congratulations!!!

This year’s Memorial workout was truly a monumental event in more ways than one, not only was it our largest gathering thus far but it was marked by a very special promotion…
At the end of this years event and in front of all his fellow students and supporters, Gabe was promoted to Kadua Guro…

For those of you who do not yet know Gabe he has been with Inayan for almost six years of uninterrupted training making almost every training. His commitment to the Inayan Martial Arts Association has truly been a something amazing. Whenever Gabe has been needed he has stepped up and truly performed in an Honorable and Respectful manner…

We our truly fortunate to have Kadua Guro Gabe as a part of the Inayan Martial Arts Association and congratulate him on his accomplishment.

Another BIG Congratulations!!!

Inayan Martial Arts Association students Bethany Schultz and Paul Meier recently competed in the Brazilian Jujitsu U.S. Open held in Santa Cruz, CA.
In addition to doing Inayan Eskrima both Paul and Bethany train in Brazilian Jujitsu under Gracie Black Belt Chris Smith.

They both did us all proud in competing in this international tournament. Paul did an awesome job, but had been sick the entire week before the tournament. Still he went out and fought hard.
Bethany placed 2nd in the Open division!!!! For those of you not aware, the Open division is where all weight classes fight one another. Most of Bethany’s opponents came from the light heavy weight class…Bethany is a light weight.

We are all truly proud of Bethany and Paul!

Follow Up!

In our last edition we shared with you that Brandon Katz in Indiana is currently creating custom sticks…at that point I had only seen them but was extremely impressed. Since then I have become the proud owner of two Espada y Daga sets and the only world I can use is WOW! The quality that goes into these is simply amazing…I highly recommend everyone who is serious about their training to contact Brandon at www.eskrimacustoms.com As a suggestion , Christmas is right around the corner so to be able to receive your custom weapons order now!

Inayan Eskrima DVD’s

Also remember that the original Mangisursuro Mike Inay training videos and DVD’s can be purchased through www.inayaneskrima.com they cover several different subjects and are of excellent quality.

Also please note the 2008 will mark the introduction of Inayan Eskrima/Inayan Martial Arts Association training DVD’s that will build upon the information on the previous set and introduce new and Dynamic techniques. Please watch for these releases on the news section found at www.inayanmartialarts.com

Inayan Trivia/History Questions Answers

1. Mangisursuro’s first Eskrima lesson was held in GM Cabales apartment living room, Stockton, CA.
2. The first Serrada technique was Angle #1 Outside Pass.
3. Mangisursuro studied Kung Fu for a brief time before finding Eskrima (Lucky for us he didn’t like it!)

With that I would like to truly thank you for your support….we have had an amazing year with incredible growth in base student body and by 4 affiliate schools teaching and sharing the beauty and effectiveness of Inayan Eskrima. Mangisursuro had a dream of sharing the incredible gift of Filipino Martial Arts, and every day that you sacrifice to train, take a bump, get hit…or simply pause about the gift and enrichment that the FMA has brought you and hopefully those around you…you honor his memory….

On behalf of the Inayan Martial Arts Association we would like to wish you and your families a wonderful and Merry Christmas and an Amazing and Joyful New Year! Thank you all for making this a Better and more Peaceful place to live…
