Inayan Martial Arts Association
2008 March/April
Here we Go! Our last Newsletter before our Biggest Event of the Year, Our Annual Summer Camp! We are looking forward to the Largest Gathering in Inayan history as well as an Amazing learning Experience for all…Get Ready!
What is Energy?!
Often in Martial Arts we talk about Energy. It wasn’t until I was asked about “What is this Energy that you all talk about” that I was really put on the spot t o define it…so in it’s simplest form. The energy I am referring to is not the incredible power that we generate in our strikes, blocks and techniques…rather the Energy that we refer to is “Caring, Sharing and Achieving”. Yes! That’s a lot of words to describe one that means so many to us…but I do not think one word can adequately describe the meaning that so many of us believe in and speak of. We as martial artists come together in an effort to improve our skill sets and in doing so the quality of our lives and those that we surround ourselves with.
The Energy we talk about is the positive feeling and emotion that goes into achieving our goals, it is the Warrior Spirit that overcomes us, it is the overcoming of obstacles that face us and in the process helping others in the enrichment of their own lives. Looking around and seeing the smiles that comes from people challenging themselves and overcoming those challenges is the easiest outward signal of the Energy we all talk about.
The Energy of martial arts is a bond that we as martial artists share, it is a true brotherhood of sweat, blood and tears. But this same bond can be seen in sports teams looking for a win, a company striving to succeed and even a grade school class room putting on a play. The Energy that comes from a group of people doing something positive can be an infectious thing…a comparison you make is a group of people laughing…everyone loves to laugh and you want to know what was so funny?
On the flip side of the positive energy we have talked about, we have all experienced negative energy! Have you ever walked into a room full of people and wanted to leave as soon as you came in? Have you ever met someone and got the feeling that something wasn’t right? More so have you ever NOT trusted that feeling and been wrong? Our intuition is a huge part of of Positive and Negative Energy!
The Energy and feeling that we get from people and places is a deep rooted or hard wired instinct that comes from generations of evolution. We know where we are welcomed and cared for, and we know where there is ill will and danger…trust your instincts and believe in the Energy that comes form others and your environment.
Our most important lesson from this is simple situation is that every chance you get surround yourself with those that have that positive energy that is going to help us get somewhere in life!
Those that have negative feelings or energy are simply Vampires….they will suck you for all you are worth.
Those that give positive energy enrich us. During a recent speech to my Eskrima class, my Tae Kwon Do teacher Master Tony Thompson said something profound to the class that drives me as a teacher every day..I have heard him say a lot of things but this one struck me with it’s simplicity…
He Simply said… It is our Job to Inspire Others!
As soon as I heard this I recognized that is not only my job as a teacher to try and Inspire, but rather my obligation as a friend, family member and a member of our society to make this world a better place by helping those around me…sometimes it may ne a kind word, or a smile, or sometimes much more…the point is, is it’s up to us…
Instead of mediocrity embrace those beliefs that encourage you to be your best, that push you to the level of excellence that you are capable of…Surround yourself with the positive energy of others that are moving forward in life…Successful, happy people want to share there rewards with others because it feeds their belief in there Success system! Embrace those people and their Words, Philosophies and Lessons…
When Opportunity Comes a’Knockin…Kick Down that Door!
Often life presents us with incredible opportunities, often these opportunities come daily! But out of doubt, fear or ignorance we choose to let the instances pass us by..and by…and by.
The point is, when do you not only start recognizing these opportunities, but start doing everything you can to take full advantage of them!
If anything we often choose to fear and shun these events for fear of failure. Let’s face it we have all experienced failure and it makes us fell horrible! So sometime we put our guard and pass on things that come to us for hear of repeating that same feeling…
This perhaps is our worst Failure in Life!
Failure, at least in a true warrior sense is the simply come down to the lack of Courage to Make your very best Effort!
With that said, you have to ask your self some honest and personal questions…more so you have to ready be to answer them honestly and with humility..
Is anything worth Having, not worth Losing…
Am I Strong Enough to Risk Failure to Succeed…
Is the Reward worth the Possibility of Failure…
Am I prepared to make the Sacrifices that it takes to Succeed…
Am I ready to take control of my Future…
These are not questions asked by some self help specialist, rather these are questions we all have to ask when doubt takes control of our dreams…
I wonder how many risks that my life life has presented themselves to me during my life were incredible opportunities that I did not have the courage to face…
So with that said, I simply say don’t wait…don’t wait for opportunities to fall in your lap…rather chase them down and embrace them. Believe in yourself and future and you can do anything…and if failures should arise, know that it wasn’t for a lack of effort. And Know that will any set back comes a lesson and a strength that we could not otherwise receive.
Stand by your vision when obstacles arise and keep moving Forward. You only have two alternatives… to stand and fight or fall back…as a Warrior what is your purpose….
To Keep Fighting , Until the Battle is Won…
Welcome New Students…

Preventing Injuries
Injuries are apart of any sport or physical activity, however we can take a preventative steps to minimize the chances of the obstacles in our training.
1. Stretch- This is the most important aspect of your pre-workout routine. Whether stretching your legs for kicking techniques or warming up your wrists and forearms for Eskrima workout.
2. Dress Appropriately- During winter months it is important to stay warm. Especially important is to wear a heavy jacket and hat. (God I sound like my Dad) It is incredibly important to keep warm especially after a strong workout.
3. Understand the Technique- Many times directions for a particular move or technique may be unclear to you the student. This can easily lead to miscommunication between you and your training partner. Never be shy about asking questions about a technique or to clarify the material you are being taught.
4. Take your Vitamins-Yes it sounds like what we’ve heard for years, but it’s true. A great diet is important, there is no replacement for the right foods! But we can reinforce that by taking a simple multi vitamin. The important thing is to try various ones that best fits you and your body.
5. Be Prepared- have the proper equipment to due the job. If ever you do not feel that your have the right equipment, please notify your instructor.
