2007 Inayan Martial Arts Summer Camp Review
Let me first just say WOW!!! What an experience! I cannot thank everyone enough for their participation in this year’s camp. Between the incredible talent and contributions of the Instructors and the amazing effort of all the camp participants the year’s camp truly set a new standard! With over 250 years of martial arts experience on the floor we were truly honored to have the following people share their skills!
Our instructor line up Included
Master Anthony Brewer- 2 Time National Sports Jujitsu Champion and World Sport Karate Champion.
Master Brewer as usual came out on fire! Teaching ground position and why we get in those position for submission, as well as how to prevent and escape from such positions…
I have known Anthony for over 20 years and I can honestly say he is one of the best going in martial arts today.
Grandmaster Dave Burt- Founder Real World Street fighting
Grandmaster Burt gave us all a reality check with his Real World Street fighting techniques and tactics…of particular interest was the continuous sparring which I think gave everyone a glimpse into how a fight can go BAD in a hurry.
Thank you to Grandmaster Burt and his assistants for the reality check that we all need when it comes to combative applications. His insight and material were incredible addition to this year’s event.
Master Francis Farley- Kickboxing
Master Farley’s insights into kickboxing were invaluable! We started with a few simple counters to kicks and sweeps that I immediately recognized as crucial parts to any martial arts curriculum.
We were truly lucky and honored to have this Kickboxing legend share with us an incredible time!
Master Mike Hagen- Defensive Tactics
Master Hagen’s insight into the strategy of stand up and going to the ground were truly a cornerstone of this year’s camp. Master Hagen did an incredible job of explaining to all participants the advantages and weaknesses of positions and gave us alternate solutions to the problems.
What can I say about Master Hagen! He’s the Best! Mike was one of my first teachers and is the senior student of our Tae Kwon Do teacher Master Tony Thompson.
Masirib Cory Hanosh- Inayan Eskrima
Ah Lefties…aren’t they Wonderful. A truly overlooked part of martial arts is learning and dealing with Left handed attackers!
Masirib Hanosh insight into the Left handed combat applications.
Even with his incredibly busy teaching schedule, Masirib Hanosh made sure to make an incredible contribution to this years camp.
Guro Steve Kohn-South East Asia Blend
Guro Kohn covered several different aspect of martial arts including techniques from Kali and Silat. His insights and understanding of the way these methods of martial arts compliment one another can not be overstated!
Steve is simply amazing. His attitude and spirit are something we should all strive for. Technically he is amazing, but his fun presentation of the material makes learning from him a real joy!
Tagaturo Steve Klement- Inayan Eskrima
Tagaturo Klement gave an in depth series of seminars regarding Inayan Serrada and Dequerdas with a strong emphasizes on stick to stick disarms.
Tagaturo Klement without a doubt is truly one of the authorities when it comes to Inayan Eskrima. Tagaturo’s reputation for producing quality Eskrima students is unmatched.
Coach Beth Moscov- Crossfit
Beth is AWESOME! Putting us all through our paces she gave us a glimpse into a totally and different way of thinking about fitness. Here Cross Fit workout were dynamic and energy charged!
Pangulong Guro Jon Ward- Inayan Eskrima
Funny and Extremely Good Looking, Charming well I could go on and on…hahaha
Our Group…
Quite Frankly we could not have asked for a better group to work with! You guys were incredible!!! With your enthusiasm and your desire to better yourselves as martial artists you gave the instructors a truly rewarding experience. Just think, you all went through three months of training in 3 days!!! And you got to train with some of the top people in the world! Master Abbott once told me, “When opportunity knocks don’t answer the door, kick it down!” That’s what you all did this weekend. We had some incredible compliments regarding our weekend of fun and friendship and that what makes the whole thing worth while. I hope that this experience will last you a life time…and get ready because 2008 promises to be even bigger and better with more surprises, and NEW World Class Instructors! Philippine Prehistory - The First Inhabitants - 40,000 BC
The Philippines is an archipelago of 7,107 islands in the South China Sea situated between Taiwan to the north and Borneo to the south. Just 2,000 of its islands are inhabited and only 500 are larger than a kilometre square. The nine largest islands of Luzon, Mindanao, Palawan, Panay, Mindoro, Samar, Negros, Leyte and Cebu make up 90% of the nation's land area.
Over the past two million years, the earth has undergone twenty cycles of glaciations. During these ice ages, glaciers accumulate on land a substantial quantity of the earth's water in the form of ice and cause the water levels in the world's oceans to drop. At the height of the last ice age, the sea levels around the Philippines were at least 50 metres lower than they are today. The present sea beds surrounding the Malay peninsula and the islands of Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Palawan were all above water making one huge extension to the continental land mass of Asia.
The earth's climate began warming 18,000 years ago and the oceans regained their present high levels about 8,000 years ago.
No pre-hominid or hominid species such as australopithecus or homo erectus has been found in the Philippines. The first human beings probably reached the Philippines about 40,000 years ago at roughly the same time as they reached Australia and New Guinea. The Philippines, like Australia and New Guinea, were never actually joined to the south east Asian mainland but, at the low ocean levels, the water barrier was much less. The earliest human bones found in the Philippines were on Palawan of modern type and date to 22,000 B.P. although stone tools from Palawan date back to 30,000 B.P.
The original people of the Philippines were the ancestors of the people known today as Negritos or Aeta. They are an Australo-Melanesian people with dark skin and tight, curly brown hair. They are also distinctively small and of short stature. As the Pygmies in the equatorial forests of Africa, the Aeta are believed to have adapted locally to the tropical jungles of the Philippines.
The Aeta are a nomadic hunting and gathering people who forage in small family bands with an informal organization and leadership. They were once widespread throughout the Philippines but are now found only in the remote highland areas of Luzon, Palawan, Panay, Negros and Mindanao.
The answer to our trivia questions is:
Grandmaster Max Sarimento introduced Mangisusuro Inay to Grandmaster Angel Cabales.
That’s it for now, look for the next addition in September! Until then Be Safe, Train Hard and SMILE!
