Inayan Martial Arts Association
2008 January/February
Happy New Year!!! Sorry this Newsletter comes a few weeks late but I wanted to be sure that information for the upcoming events were as complete as possible. 2008 promises to be the most amazing year in the growth and enrichment of the Inayan Martial Arts Association.
With this years events on tap, including one of the best line ups of Instructors for a Camp in the World, we as an organization continue to push the envelope of Excellence in the International Filipino Martial Arts Community…
This is all due to YOU the Students and Instructors of the Inayan Martial Arts Association, through your continued efforts and commitment of bringing the Filipino Martial Arts to the forefront of the those who are searching for an effective and different approach to self defense and fitness.
Set your own Course, Create your own Vision…
“Aspirations are fueled by Inspiration and Achieved through Perspiration”
Well yes it’s that time of year again when we look back on what we accomplished, and for many of us for what we whish we had. This is why we all set our New Year’s Resolutions!!! The goals the we want to accomplish that simply did not materialize in the previous year.
Goal setting can often be double edge sword. On the positive side we have a vision of where we would like to be or want to achieve…this great to understand our Vision!
On the other side we sometimes set incredibly difficult or unattainable goals. This is a recipe for failure.
With that said here are a few tips on creating an effective and achievable goal setting system!
1. Understand your Vision!
Your Vision is essentially the big picture. This is the level of proficiency and or wisdom you set your goal to attain. This is your eventual destination. However remember that getting there is not the enriching part it is the journey or the achievement of the goals to see your Vision come true that truly enriches your life.
2. Set Realistic and Attainable Goals!
Often we want to achieve as much as possible as quickly as possible. This is known as instant gratification. The easiest example of this is fast food. What differs in these is the quality of the food and if we are training in martial arts the quality of technique.
Therefore set smaller attainable goals that provide quality to your martial arts and quality to your overall life style.
3. Record Everything!
Keep daily diary of your personal Journey! By understanding where you came from you have a great understanding of where you are going. Write down specific techniques and or accomplishments you achieve on a daily basis.
Also a great way of keeping track of your progress is through a video journal…you truly can get a true view of your progress through your own words and actions!
4. Be Creative!
Remember to change your training and training environment….don’t become stagnant. Your progress is up to you so have fun while training. This can be as simple as playing with your dog! Evasion is a major part of FMA so when playing with your dog, as he jumps to touch or play swith you avoid his touch…your pet will think it’s a great game and you are training.
5. Goals are Changeable!!!
Sometimes life throws us curves balls …perhaps we gain the ability to overcome these challenges, and sometimes we need to pull back and understand that these overwhelming goals are more than we can handle. These are some of our most important lessons…we need to look at things objectively. We need to identify our weaknesses as well as our strengths in order to develop our best plan for SUCCESS! Embrace your shortcomings and understand that overcoming these are our biggest achievements and pathways to rewards!
6. Live in the PRESENT!
Often as we set our Goals and see our Vision we get caught up in what will be…while this is fun, do not close you eyes to the present. Embrace who you are and the gifts and blessings you receive every day. The rewards that you achieve should benefit all of those who supported you during the Journey! Do not forsake what we will have, for what we do have….Appreciate Every Day!

October Inayan Introductions
This October our Association made it a point to bring different friends and acquaintances to share in an Inayan Eskrima class. This was an immediate success with over twenty new people being introduced to the Art. Whether they are all able to join us in 2008 has yet to be seen. What is important is our students took time out of their schedules to try and enrich the live of others by sharing their interest an Inayan Eskrima. For our visitors, thank you for allowing us to communicate the Art of Inayan Eskrima to you and spending time with us. Everyone had a great time and I am sure we made some new friends and students.

Hosting an Inayan Eskrima Seminar
The question has come up several times recently as to have to host an Inayan Eskrima seminar at individual schools. Here are a few things to remember
* Check the previous dates to makes sure there is availability.
* Understand the level of the students who will be attending so that we can plan for a Successful and Fun Seminar.
* Avoid planning seminars around Holidays.
* The Inayan Martial Arts Association does not conduct seminars in the month of December.
* Have a good idea of what you would like to cover at a seminar or weekend workshop.
Please contact Guro Ward at guroward@inayanmartialarts.com to set fun and exciting seminar at your school today!
Inayan Trivia/History Questions Answers
1. The Loma Prieta Earthquake knocked down Suro’s house in 1989. The Earthquake measured 7.1. As a Funny or Scary side note Suro’s house was on Loma Prieta Road that was on the actual fault line!
2. Mangisursuro’s birthday is December 11th, 1944. We recently remembered his 63rd Birthday.
3. In 1979 Mangisursuro Inay co-founded and leader West Coast Eskrima Society. This was the forerunner of many of the FMA organizations that exist today.
OK!!! So for our first Newsletter of the year we thought we would include a staple in the Filipino Diet…Chicken Adobo!!!! FMA is about sharing the Filipino culture, and there is no better than with Chicken Adobo! We promise you will enjoy and that this simple recipe will become a favorite of yours…
Chicken Adobo
Ingredients…
* 1 Whole Chicken (can substitute with your favorite parts)
* 1 Whole Clove of Garlic
* Olive or Vegetable Oil
* 4 Whole Black Pepper Cloves
* 3 Dried Bay Leaves
* 1 Cup Soy Sauce
* 1 Cup Vinegar
* Salt
* Pepper
** Option Lemon
Cooking…
+ Wash your chicken thoroughly and cut.
+ Lightly Salt and Pepper your Chicken
++ Heat Oil and add Garlic
++ Cook Garlic until lightly brown and then add chicken
++ Add Chicken and Sauté and simmer until the chicken until it is beginning to tenderize.
++ Add Whole Black Pepper Cloves, Soy Sauce, Vinegar and let simmer for 25 to 35 minutes or until chicken is done.
** Make sure to add more Vinegar or Soy Sauce until it suits your tastes (should be tangy).
** If you want your Adobo sweeter add 7 Up and letter simmer for 5 minutes.
Serve over Rice.
There are a great many variations to the Adobo recipe. One of my favorites to Fry the chicken before adding it to the mix!
Another personal favorite of mine is too add Red Potatoes…
Please note that there are an amazing amount of Adobo Recipes on the Internet, research and find the one you enjoy BEST! It is truly hard to go wrong with this simple and wonderful dish…
Well there you go! Our first newsletter of the what promises to be an amazing year!!! Train Hard, Be Safe and Enjoy the Journey!
